Second Grade Spelling

This afternoon on the way home from school Jere announced that his baseball coach had said a bad word. Without really thinking I asked, "what bad word?"

Jere said, "it's really bad, so bad I'm going to need to spell it. P-I-S-T"

Cousin Christopher added, " it's P-I-S-S-D"

Close but no cigar boys.

I guess I should be glad they don't know how to spell this particular word!

Baseball is Back!

Today was Opening Day for baseball! Jere's team had their first game this afternoon. A couple of things I would like to point out:

1. When you yell at the top of your lungs all over the baseball park for your - I don't know - 12 year old? daughter?, when you do find her, please refrain from using profanity or at a minimum lower your voice. (This one was not me or anyone I know)

2. Do not to park your month old vehicle in a parking spot where a player -if able - could hit the ball over the fence! It came really close, but did not hit. Thank you Lord!

The funny part about this story is that early in the game the coach's wife said to me, "I've always wondered who parks their car in that parking lot. It's like they're asking for trouble." I sort of giggled and said, "I didn't even think about a ball hitting my car." (another car, yes)

And to myself recalled how I was so excited to be able to park in such a HUGE parking space where there was NO chance of anyone hitting me. HA!

Sure enough 3 innings later her son hit the ball clear over the fence and right beside my car. I know cars are just things, but I do believe I am expected to take good care of the things God has entrusted to me.
That and I will be driving it for the next 10-15 years.
3. BYOB - Bring Your Own Beverage. The ball park has changed concession companies and now uses Pepsi products - oh the horror! I normally pack a cooler for our family because water bottles and diet cokes cost $1 each. And we keep these in stock in our house! I'm not back into the swing of ball season. We sent Caroline over to the concession stand to get one water bottle (David) and one diet coke (me). When she came back she said "look what they gave me!"
I'm sorry but diet Pepsi/Pepsi zero or whatever is just not the same as Diet Coke.

4. Jere's coach is awesome! One of the things he does for the players is provide some incentives. Any player who catches a pop fly gets a hot dog after the game. And any player who hits an out of the park home run (over the fences) gets a Steak.

That is a hot dog in Jere's hand. His coach (pictured) had to buy a bunch of hot dogs today!

They played a great game beating the Nationals 21 to 14.
If you liked comment number 1 stay tuned. Baseball brings out some very interesting people! I will have stories.

Good News

The LORD has done great things for us,
and we are filled with joy. Psalm 126:3

Some of you might remember Julie's (David's sister) healing from a brain tumor in November of 2007. Recently, at routine eye doctor visit the doctor saw something that he thought should be evaluated further. This along with really bad headaches prompted another MRI.

Her neurosurgeon scheduled her MRI for Friday night. Who does MRI's on a Friday night? So David's parents had, in addition to our two, Julie's three children. Five in total! Aren't they wonderful?

After the MRI the technician told Julie she should hear something on Monday. Sunday afternoon she drove her children down to the beach for Spring Break. Patsy, David's mom, followed her with our two children. (David was unable to fly into Georgetown with Jere and Caroline due to weather conditions)

Late yesterday afternoon, we received the best news: The MRI was clean! Why the headaches? She has been referred to a neurologist for this issue.

Remote Blog Post

I am writing to you from a place known as the Promise Land on earth - the beach! David and I are helping our neighbor - the one whose house y'all have mentioned liking- to celebrate a pretty big birthday this weekend.

The ladies all drove down today. David and the birthday boy will fly down tomorrow morning. The two of them are planning to play golf tomorrow. The other men will arrive later on tomorrow.

On Sunday the plan is for David - and three others - to fly home. David will pick up our children and hopefully our neice Morgan and fly back. Julie is going to be driving down on Sunday with her crew. Some of the private schools in Charlotte have Spring Break next week so it will be fun times at the beach!

Since we needed a car to get the kids' bikes and David's golf clubs down here, I was THRILLED to drive by myself today. I had the best time listening to my iPod and a little Dave Ramsey on the drive down. I had downloaded some Sandi Patti tunes yesterday - can someone say Was it a Morning Like this?- and y'all that girl can sing - high, loud and long!!

Listening to her music also made me realize how thankful I am that the style of Contemporary Christian music has changed!!

The others are still not here. I am relishing a quiet, clean house.

Special thanks to my sweet husband for playing mommy for the day and tonight. Tomorrow David's parents are taking over so that we can have a fun weekend. Getting my house ready for them to stay in could be a post all in itself. They aren't picky, but I don't want them to think their son married a slob either!! Self-induced pressure - why do we do this to ourselves?

I'll be back throughout the weekend and into the week. I'm sure I'll have some good stories.

Bobsledding in Springtime!

First, I would like to start this post by saying that I refuse to let this be another installment of Loser Mom. So here goes!

The weather has been so beautiful the past few days. Yesterday after school Jere and Caroline had such fun riding bikes and playing outside. Today was another gorgeous day. While Caroline (my new bike rider - training wheels are gone!!) seemed to ride her bike endlessly today, Jere decided that he wanted to do something a little more daring.

He got out our old red wagon and was riding down our driveway into the cul-de-sac in it. I was perfectly fine with this because I have seen (and heard about) much worse (and much more dangerous) things the child has done!

After a few runs, he graduated to our neighbors mega driveway. The first couple of times were awesome (see below). He had incredible control of the wagon and was steering it exactly where it needed to go. Then I think he got a little bit of a big head. (This is when he was exhibiting the incredible control and did not have a big head)

Here he is after one or two runs -

Caroline saw our other neighbor out and ran to her and said, "Come watch Jere!!" so Cathy came over to watch. She could.not.believe that I did not have a helmet on my child.

Let me back up and say that when my kids' ride their bikes they MUST wear their helmets. It is not an option - it's the law! And my nickname of death's around the corner I earned honestly. I usually am a conscientious parent. At times might even be considered over protective.

So back to the wagon ride. Jere had been going so slow and exhibiting such control of the little wagon that I did not even think about the need for a helmet.

This time he realized he had an audience. So he went further up the neighbor's driveway to start. And he was going really fast. About halfway down he lost control and seriously busted. Of course he jumped up and said "that was awesome" and "I'm okay". But the bloody knee told me otherwise.

After cleaning and bandaging the wound, he sat down to do his homework and then decided his knee really hurt him. So much so that he might not even be able to go to baseball practice. He quickly got over that and is fine tonight.

Later on I got to thinking about how Jere's bobsledding attempt is much like sin in my own life.

I dabble in it and do okay - nothing bad happens. So with crazy confidence and messed up thinking I do it again. Maybe I even have by-standers cheering me on! It is not until I bust (possibly getting hurt) that I realize I had no business doing it in the first place!

Goal Update

It's the beginning of March and I thought I'd share an update on where I am on the road to meeting my "goals" for 2009.

* I plan to read through the Bible in 2009 * I am on track to meet this goal! According to my calculations I have now,at the end of February, read 1/6th of the Bible. And I have learned so much!

One of the readings coincided perfectly with what Jere's class was studying at school. When I was helping him study for the test I was so excited that I knew some of the same details he was being tested on. This particular week was on Joseph's life in prison and Joseph's interpretation of the Cup bearer's Dream.

I was raised in a Christian home, have gone to Church most all of my life, went to a Christian high school and yet some of these stories that my second grader is learning I am learning the detail rich material right along side of him.

So reading the entire Bible by the end of the year is attainable.

* I plan to reach my goal of tracking where dollars go in the household budget * I would not say I have made as much progress in this area as I would like. I can track everything that was spent using a debit card. I'll just leave it at that!

This is a work in progress.

* I am going to run a 5K in 2009 * The 5K has been scheduled, the cohorts have been found, the hotel room has been secured, the training is painful.

Dawn (who needs a blog), Christy (wnab), Sherri, and I are running in the Race for the Cure in Savannah Ga in April. My friend August, who I did the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer with, is on the team bringing this race to Savannah. When she told me about the race and that Paula Deen was going to be the Honorary Chairman - I was in!!

The way I figure it we'll enjoy Friday in Savannah, run Saturday morning (anywhere from 15 minutes (Dawn) to 45 minutes or more (the rest of us) ), and enjoy Savannah the rest of the time. I think 1 hour of pain is worth a fun-filled weekend. Don't you?

Snow Day III

Today was our 3rd Snow Day this year! Jere and Caroline went outside to play in the snow before breakfast. Here they are back inside and ready to eat!

Hot Chocolate was served:

Jere running to get into the picture - this picture pretty much sums him up ALWAYS running!!

Back outside where Caroline made some snowballs. Doesn't she look cold with her exposed neck?
Fancy stood guard enjoying children playing.

All in all it was a fun day. Something really great came in today's mail:

David's Commercial Pilot's License!! We are so proud of him! (When I took this picture he said, "Are you going to put this on Facebook?") So check there too!
